Utah Election Integrity Network Calls on Utah Leaders to Strengthen Election Security Following Recent National Developments

Salt Lake City, Utah — Following recent alarming reports from President Trump revealing a large-scale election infrastructure breach by China, Homeland Security finding hundreds of thousands of noncitizens on voter rolls in only four states, and New Jersey registering thousands of noncitizens to vote via faulty DMV software, the Utah Election Integrity Network (Utah EIN) calls on Utah leaders to work with federal officials to strengthen voter registration integrity, improve voter roll accuracy, and increase trust in Utah’s elections.

Election security has long been a bipartisan concern. Recent national developments have renewed attention to protecting voter registration systems. Polling shows 87% of Americans support ensuring that only eligible citizens are registered to vote.

“The revelation that a foreign entity breached our sensitive election infrastructure and unlawfully exfiltrated hundreds of millions of non-public voter information is shocking. Protecting our elections begins with protecting our voter rolls,” said Kim Coleman, Director of the Utah EIN. “The discovery that officials in the intelligence community who were obligated to identify and notify of threats and vulnerabilities to critical infrastructure chose, instead, to unlawfully manipulate and withhold this information from two presidents, demands immediate action.

Utah EIN encourages Governor Spencer Cox, legislative leaders, and state election officials to cooperate with the U.S. Department of Justice and other federal agencies as they investigate election-related security concerns and identify opportunities to strengthen election administration.

Utah EIN specifically encourages state leaders to:

• Support passage of the SAVE Act, requiring documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.
• Expand Utah’s use of the Department of Homeland Security’s Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) Program to assist with citizenship verification and voter roll maintenance.
• Continue lawful voter roll maintenance using all available verification tools while cooperating with appropriate federal investigations.
• Increase transparency and review Utah’s election laws against nationally recognized best practices, including the Model Election Laws Handbook, to strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.
